Introduction to Kaasstengels

-

Crispy cheese sticks

Kaasstengels are a popular deep-fried snack in the Netherlands and Belgium, likely introduced in the 1990s or 2000s as a crispy variation of the cheese croquette and cheese soufflé. Inspired by mozzarella sticks, they feature a crunchy coating with creamy, melted cheese inside. Their vegetarian appeal and perfect pairing with dipping sauces quickly made them a favorite at parties, in bars, and snack bars.

Recipe for Kaasstengels (20 sticks)

Ingredients

  • 3 thick slices of cheddar cheese, 5 mm thick

  • 20 spring roll wrappers of 10 × 10 cm

  • Water

Instructions

  1. Cut the cheese into 20 equal strips of 8 centimeters.

  2. Place a spring roll wrapper with the point facing up; brush the dough with water. Place the 'cheese fry' horizontally in the middle. Fold the left and right points of the dough inwards and then the bottom point upwards, and roll up like a spring roll.

  3. Fry the cheese sticks for about 2 minutes until golden brown at 180 °C.

Extra tips

Enjoy with a big dot of ketchup!
